The 411 about QR Codes

Do you ever see that funny looking little box with all the lines in all directions built inside a square? Kind of reminds you of a bar code, right? Well it is a two- dimensional barcode, but it probably won’t help you check out at a grocery store unless you have a smart phone.

Lights out at the museum

Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium will let the creatures of the night take over this summer.

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is going dark this summer, but don't worry –- it's only so the bats feel more at home.

Vampire bats, frog-eyed geckos, emperor scorpions, flashlight fish and other creatures of the night form the basis of "In the Dark," the next exhibit at the river museum.

The exhibit opens Sunday, June 5, and replaces "Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America" in the second-floor Norman Changing Gallery of the river museum's William Woodward Mississippi River Center.

Icky exchange

After a close race to gain 'likes' on Facebook, marketing directors at river museum and Blank Park Zoo are performing 'dirty jobs.

It looked like the scene from a horror movie.

Ryan Bickel, marketing director for Des Moines' Blank Park Zoo, thrust his hands into a writhing mulch pile to pluck out thumb-sized cockroaches that had burrowed their way deep inside.

"I think one almost got in your hair," said John Sutter, marketing director of the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, as his counterpart dug deeper into the mulch for the frantically scurrying insects.
