Superbowl Ads-Not Just Entertainment

The marketing techniques are to entertain, gain celebrity endorsements, product benefit or feature, target audience, and associate brand with a mascot or symbol.  I'm sure you can think of a few commericals or advertisements for each of these categories that have done a great job in demonstrating a certain marketing technique.

Entertainment is hands down one of the most important technique used in advertising.  If a viewer is entertained and having a good time while watching the commerical, there's a good chance they will remember it for quite a while.  Sometimes the writers of commercials get too caught up in the entertaining concept that they forget to market their product.  We have all had those commercials that puzzle us at the end and we ask ourself "what was that commercial even for?"  You want to entertain but make sure your product or service is remembered.

Celebrity craze has hit an all time high.  People are always looking to someone famous to get a new style, new hair do, or read the gossip columns to get the juicy dirt on the people we admire.  We as a society are caught up by the rich and famous so what better way to sell a product or service than use a celebrity in the commercial.  People want to use what their idol uses.  If a 12 year old girl saw Miley Cirus eating a Big Mac in a commerical, you can bet good money the next time they are hungry they will want to go eat a Big Mac so they feel like in a small way they are like their idol. Remember a celebrity doesn't have to be a Hollywood Millionaire, they could be a hometown hero that everyone admires in your area.

It's very important to make sure in the commercial to project the product benefit or feature.  Viewers want to know what they are getting with your product or service.  This is the time to market you best qualities to set yourself above your competition.  What benefit or feature does your product/service have that others do not.

Target your audience.  Think about when your commercial or advertisement will be airing to the public.  If it's during the Superbowl game, think about the majority of the people that will be viewing your ad.  Sports lovers watch the Superbowl so it's a prime time to put on a commercial having anything to do with sports (events, products, ect.).  People like to eat during the game with friends and family so marketing food is always a good option.  If your ad will be viewed at night time, maybe consider going with a theme about sleeping or a good nights sleep because that is most likely in the thoughts of the people watching television at that time.

Last but not least, associate your brand with a symbol or mascot.  Everyone knows what the Golden arches stand for: McDonalds.  They are a company that has done a fantastic job relating their restaurants with a symbol.  People of all ages know what to look for when trying to find a McDonalds.  They also have created Ronald McDonald to associate the restaurant with.  When you hear the name, you know what company they are talking about.  Brand association is a great way to have people remember your product or service.  Remember if you don't have millions of dollars to spend on creating a large mascot, start smaller.  Come up with some drawings that you can put in the advertisement that can easily be spotted and remembered.

The superbowl really has some great marketing techniques that can really help people in all areas.  Pay close attention this year to pick out which technique the advertisment is portraying.  Who knows it may be more than one!
